Day 2: Journeying to the Abode of Clouds – Guwahati to Cherrapunjee
After breakfast, we hit the road and drive toward Cherrapunjee, traveling approximately 150 kilometers over 5 hours through gorgeous hill country.
Deep Caves and Soaring Waterfalls

- Arwah & Mawsmai Caves: Venture inside ancient limestone formations to witness fossil patterns and dramatic natural rock pillars.
- Nohkalikai & Seven Sisters Falls: Marvel at some of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India, safely nestled against dramatic mountain backdrops.
After checking out the sweeping views, we check into our Cherrapunjee hotel for dinner and a cozy overnight stay.
Pro-Tip: Cherrapunjee is legendary for its sudden mists and damp conditions. Carry a lightweight, windproof jacket or poncho in your daypack to stay dry while photographing the waterfalls.
Day 3: Asia’s Cleanest Village and the Crystal Waters of Dawki
Pack your bags for an early checkout after breakfast. Today is packed with postcard-perfect cultural and natural marvels.
Living Bridges and Transparent Rivers
- Mawlynnong Village: Walk the pristine paths of the universally recognized “Cleanest Village in Asia”.
- Living Root Bridge: Admire the incredible indigenous engineering of bridges woven from the living roots of ancient rubber trees.
- Balancing Rock: View a unique local geological oddity where a massive boulder balances perfectly on a tiny stone base.
- Dawki & Umngot River: Drive down to Dawki to witness the jaw-dropping, glass-like clarity of the Umngot River and look out over the nearby India-Bangladesh border view.
Later in the afternoon, we continue our drive to the charming hill station of Shillong for dinner and our overnight stay.
Pro-Tip: While visiting the Umngot River in Dawki, an optional local boating trip is highly recommended to get the best views of the clear water, though it is an additional out-of-pocket expense.
Day 4: Scenic Transit from Shillong to Tezpur
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before checking out. Today is dedicated to a scenic transit across state lines as we journey deeper into the valleys of Assam.
Crossing into Assam
We travel approximately 270 kilometers over 7 to 8 hours towards the historic town of Tezpur. Watch the lush tea gardens and changing topography pass by your window. Upon arrival, check into your hotel, unpack, and enjoy a comforting dinner buffet before turning in.
Traveler’s Note: Long road days are the perfect opportunity to stay well-hydrated and sample local treats along the highway. Keep a water bottle handy and enjoy the changing countryside vistas.
Day 5: Ascending the Eastern Himalayas – Tezpur to Dirang
After breakfast, we continue our journey northward, entering the beautiful state of Arunachal Pradesh. Our target is the tranquil valley town of Dirang, located roughly 200 kilometers away (a 5 to 6-hour drive).
Entering the Alpine Valley
As we climb higher into the Eastern Himalayas, the air turns wonderfully crisp and cool. We will check into our Dirang hotel by the afternoon, leaving your entire evening completely free to relax, explore the local area at your leisure, or take photos. Wrap up the day with a warm dinner at the hotel.
Traveler’s Note: As the altitude changes, the evening temperature drops noticeably. Pull out your warmer sweaters and jackets from your luggage before evening sets in.
Day 6: Over the Spectacular Sela Pass to Tawang
Today brings one of the most dramatic mountain drives of your lifetime. After breakfast, we check out and begin exploring the historic treasures of Dirang before climbing higher.
High Mountain Lakes and Monuments
- Dirang Dzong & Sangti Valley: Walk through a historic stone fortress village and view the sweeping alpine meadows of the valley.
- Sela Pass & Sela Lake: Cross the high-altitude Sela Pass and photograph the pristine, high-mountain Sela Lake.
- Jaswant Garh War Memorial: Stop to pay your respects at the historic memorial dedicated to a brave Indian soldier from the 1962 war.
We arrive in the grand mountain town of Tawang in the evening, checking into our hotel for dinner and a restful night.
Pro-Tip: Sela Pass sits at an extremely high altitude, where conditions can turn cold quickly. Keep heavy woolens, gloves, and an insulated flask of warm water inside the main cabin of the vehicle.
Day 7: Exploring the Sacred Heritage of Tawang
Wake up to stunning views of snow-capped peaks. After breakfast, we embark on an immersive sightseeing tour around the spiritual heart of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Spiritual Soul of Tawang
- Tawang Monastery: Explore the largest monastery in India, filled with priceless Buddhist scriptures and vibrant murals.
- Urgelling Monastery: Pay a holy visit to the historic, humble birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
- Giant Buddha Statue & War Memorial: Admire a towering statue overlooking the valley and learn about the local military history.
- PTSO Lake: Weather and road permits permitting, we journey up to view the reflective waters of this stunning high-altitude lake.
Following a fulfilling day of culture and exploration, we return to our hotel for dinner and our overnight stay.
Traveler’s Note: Visiting PTSO Lake requires special local inner line permits and is subject to local vehicle charges, which are collected directly on-site from participating passengers.
Day 8: Retracing the Himalayan Trails – Tawang back to Dirang
Enjoy your final breakfast in Tawang before checking out. Today, we begin our return loop out of the high mountains, driving back down towards Dirang.
Waterfalls and Mountain Vistas
The return drive offers a fresh perspective on the soaring Himalayan landscapes. Enjoy leisurely stops along the highway to photograph cascading waterfalls and deep river gorges that were hidden by fog on the way up. Arrive in Dirang by afternoon, check into the hotel, and relax over a hot dinner.
Pro-Tip: The mountain turns are frequent on this downward leg. If you are prone to motion sickness, make sure to take your regular medication before the vehicle departs right after breakfast.
Day 9: Descending to the Wildlife Haven of Kaziranga
After breakfast, we check out of Dirang and journey down toward the fertile floodplains of the Brahmaputra River. Our destination is the world-famous Kaziranga National Park (approx. 250 kilometers / 6-7 hours).
Transitioning to the Wild
Upon entering the park limits, look out the window—you might catch your very first glimpse of wild deer or elephants. Check into your comfortable wildlife lodge or hotel, and enjoy a completely relaxed evening at your own leisure. Dinner is served at the hotel buffet.
Traveler’s Note: Get your camera lenses and binoculars cleaned and ready tonight. Tomorrow morning brings an incredibly early start for our wilderness tracking adventure!
Day 10: Dawn Safaris in Kaziranga and Return to Guwahati
Rise and shine before the sun! Today is dedicated to experiencing the untouched wilderness of Assam.
Tracking the One-Horned Rhinoceros
Early in the morning, venture into the park for a thrilling Jeep Safari or Elephant Safari to spot the iconic Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, wild water buffaloes, and rare swamp deer. After the safari, return to the hotel for a hearty breakfast, check out, and drive back to Guwahati (approx. 220 kilometers / 5 hours). Check into your final hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Pro-Tip: Safaris are strictly subject to seasonal opening dates and park authority availability. The safari fees are paid directly on-site by guests, so coordinate with your tour manager to confirm details.
Day 11: Blessings at Maa Kamakhya Temple & Final Departure
Our final morning brings a powerful spiritual conclusion to our Northeast India tour package. We start early with a visit to the sacred Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill.
Bidding Farewell to the Hills
Seek blessings at this historic, revered Shakti Peetham. Afterward, return to the hotel for a fresh breakfast, check out of your room, and receive a comfortable transfer to the Guwahati Airport. As you board your flight home, you will carry incredible memories of ancient living root bridges, grand monasteries, and untouched wilderness.
